Safety, Side Effects & Contraindications: Although all components of this formula have been used safely in humans for centuries, the safety of this product in animals has not been clearly established.. The safety of this product in pregnant or lactating animals has not been evaluated. Although rare, severe allergy to this product may occur. If symptoms of allergic reaction should occur at any time, discontinue use immediately. While concern exists that kava preparations can induce hepatotoxicity and liver failure in human patients taking relatively normal doses3,4,5, many experts question the validity of these cases, 6,7 many of which have been associated with concurrent alcohol abuse. Regardless, use of this
product in animals with preexisting liver disease, or in those that are concurrently subjected to potentially hepatotoxic drugs or other substances, is not recommended. In humans, the Kava component of this formula can cause gastrointestinal (GI) upset, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, enlarged pupils and disturbances of oculomotor equilibrium and accommodation, dry mouth, and allergic skin reactions8 . It may also cause extrapyramidal side effects such as involuntary oral and lingual reflexes, and twisting movements of the head and trunk, possibly due to dopamine antagonism9.

Possible Drug Interactions: Theoretically, the alkaloids contained in California poppy (californine and protopine), which may be metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes, may add to the effects of benzodiazepines10. Theoretically, simultaneous use of Kava kava with other herbs and supplements with sedative properties might increase drowsiness and other sedative effects.
